If you’re looking for a salad that actually feels like a full meal, you’ve found it in this Smoked Salmon Niçoise Salad. Nicoise Salad is a classic French dish that originated in Nice, France and is commonly composed of greens, boiled potatoes, blanched green beans, boiled eggs, cherry tomatoes, tuna or anchovies, and a mustard based vinaigrette. It’s just the most incredible combination of ingredients! Let’s make it!

Is there any equipment necessary for preparing Niçoise Salad?

You’ll need a medium pot for boiling the potatoes and green beans and a pretty, large platter for building the salad.

I also love these mini whisks or vinaigrette jars for preparing the dressing!

How to Prepare Smoked Salmon Niçoise Salad:

Boil the Potatoes – Wash the potatoes, place them into a pot, add 1/2 tsp of sea salt, and cover them with cool water by 1 inch. Bring to a boil and boil for 10 minutes. Remove them from the pot using a slotted spoon and let them cool. Do not discard the water. (After they cool, slice them in half.)

Prepare the Vinaigrette – Use the 10 minutes of boiling to combine all of the listed ingredients for the vinaigrette into a small bowl and whisk vigorously to combine. Set aside.

Boil and Blanch the Green Beans – Drop the trimmed, fresh green beans into the pot of boiling water. Boil for 2 – 3 minutes, then remove to an ice bath to stop the cooking. Drain after about 2 minutes in the ice bath and dry on a towel.

Build the Salad

Arrange the greens onto a large platter.

Top with the potatoes, green beans, boiled eggs, tomatoes, cucumbers, olives, capers, and smoked salmon in the center.

A platter of fresh ingredients: sliced smoked salmon, halved boiled eggs, cherry tomatoes, green beans, sliced cucumbers, small potatoes, dark olives, and capers, arranged on a bed of leafy greens. A small bowl of dressing is beside the platter.

Drizzle with the vinaigrette and garnish with fresh fill, sea salt and fresh cracked black pepper. Enjoy!

This Smoked Salmon Niçoise Salad makes for a gorgeous dish to serve for guests or at a party! It’s always a showstopper when you bring it to the table!

Storage:

Niçoise Salad is an amazing meal prep option! It’s hearty enough for a full lunch that will give you enough energy to finish out the day! (You may not even need that 2 pm coffee run!)

Store all of the ingredients in an airtight container in the fridge for 2 – 3 days max. I recommend holding off on adding the vinaigrette if you plan to store any portion of the salad. Dress upon eating.

Ways to Customize this Dish:

  • Use tuna instead of smoked salmon!
  • Or even grilled salmon instead of smoked – check out this delicious Cedar Plank Salmon Recipe from the blog!
  • Add radishes or pickled onions to the salad!
