Ingredients:

  • Tuna: I like to use Albacore Wild Tuna for this, it's light, wild-caught, and sustainable.
  • Mayo: Kewpie mayo is a non-negotiable for this one, in my opinion! Kewpie mayo is a Japanese style mayo made with straight egg yolks instead of the whole egg. It's rich, has a super velvety texture, and does really well in Asian inspired recipes.
  • Bell Pepper: I prefer red bell pepper for this recipe. Red bell peppers have a sweeter, super bright taste which pairs very well with the mayo.
  • Green Onion: Green onion should just go in any Asian inspired recipe in my book!
  • Sesame Oil: Toasted sesame oil adds such a delicious nutty taste to the tuna. If you've never added sesame oil to tuna, you're not living! (Sesame oil is a wonderful staple ingredient to have on hand in your kitchen as well!)
  • Sriracha: Now we get to the heat! You can scale the sriracha recommendation in this recipe up or down based on your taste preference and reaction to spice.
  • Lemon: The lemon brightens the entire tuna mixture up! I add lemon to my tuna every single time, without a doubt!
  • Bread: I'm going to go old school on this one and actually recommend good old white bread. (I know shocker!) The soft white bread pairs so well with the rich mayo. And I've got a trick for getting the perfect golden crust!
Ingredients on a marble countertop include sliced green onions, Kewpie mayo, red bell peppers, sesame oil, lemon halves, lemon juice, tuna in a tin, and white bread slices on a wooden board. A gray cloth napkin is on the side.

Steps to Prepare:

STEP 1: Mix the tuna.

Drain the tuna very well and place it into a medium sized bowl. Add ¼ cup of mayo, 1 teaspoon of sesame oil, 2 tablespoon red bell pepper, and 1 tablespoon green onion. Mix well to combine. Add the lemon juice and mix it in.

STEP 2: Add the spice!

Add sriracha based on your taste preference. I usually add 2 teaspoon of sriracha. This gives it just enough heat without it taking over the sandwich entirely. Mix.

STEP 3: Build the sandwich.

Spread half of the mixture onto 2 pieces of bread. (If you've got a lunch partner, make 2 sandwiches! If not, this mixture stores well.)

A sandwich being prepared with a generous spread of tuna salad on a slice of white bread, resting on a wooden cutting board. The salad is mixed with diced veggies, giving it a colorful appearance. Another slice of bread is nearby, ready to complete the sandwich.

Spread the outside of the sandwich with a thin layer of Kewpie mayo on both sides. Just trust me on this.

STEP 4: Toast!

Heat a skillet over medium heat on the stove and place the sandwich into it. Toast for 30 - 45 seconds, just until you start to see a golden hue on the bread. (Don't burn the bread!)

Flip, toast for another 30 - 45 seconds.

Cut the sandwich in half and enjoy!

FAQ's:

Where do I find Kewpie mayo at the grocery store?

Kewpie mayo can be found in the international aisle in your grocery store, near the Japanese ingredients. It comes in a large white bottle with red writing on the outside of it.

Other fun ways to customize this sandwich:

Cheese and tomato are fun way to elevate a tuna sandwich. Cheddar cheese is what I'd recommend here.
You could also add furikake or sesame seeds to the tuna mixture to take it up a notch!

How to store:

This tuna mixture will store in the fridge in an airtight container for up to 5 days. Enjoy with crackers, on seaweed snacks, or with some boiled eggs for a protein boost!

What to serve with the Spicy Asian Style Toasted Tuna Sandwich?

I love pickled things with tuna! Pickles (like these Quickles from the blog), pickled radish, or a pickled slaw would be lovely with this!
I also really enjoy BBQ kettle chips or even sriracha flavored chips with this!
