Dive into fall flavors with Butternut Squash and Sausage Cast Iron Pizza. Roasted butternut squash and savory sausage come together in a crispy, cheesy pizza baked right in a cast iron skillet. It’s the perfect blend of seasonal goodness and comfort, making it ideal for cozy nights or casual gatherings.

I am obsessed with sweet pizzas! This delicious fall flavored pizza has me wanting to make it every other day! It hits all of the fall flavor notes and it's got this incredible honey cinnamon butter brushed all around the pillowy crust! It's just to die for!

Let's make it!

What ingredients are needed for Butternut Squash and Sausage Cast Iron Pizza?

  • pizza dough - If you don't have time to make your own, I love this brand! You could also use pre-made pizza dough, it just isn't quite the same texture, still good though!
  • butternut squash
  • sausage - If you can find sage infused sausage, I highly recommend! If not, just sprinkling in some dried sage as it cooks will work!
  • cheeses: ricotta, fresh mozzarella
  • honey, butter
  • herbs and spices: cinnamon, nutmeg, crushed red pepper, fresh sage, salt, and pepper
  • corn meal

How about equipment?

  • Just a cast iron pan for this one!

How to make Butternut Squash and Sausage Cast Iron Pizza:

  1. Prepare your pizza dough about an hour ahead of time so it has time to rest.
  2. Preheat the oven to 400° with the cast iron pan inside of it. You want the pan super hot before you place the crust into it!
  3. Cook the sausage. If you were not able to find the sage infused sausage, just sprinkle a couple teaspoons of dried sage into your regular sausage as it cooks. Drain the sausage on a paper towel when finished.
  4. Melt some butter in a sauce pan and drop in the diced butternut squash. Season it with the cinnamon, nutmeg, salt, and pepper. Place the lid over the top of the pan and let the squash soften slightly. Once it's got some nice color and it's soft enough to be pierced with a fork, pull it off the heat and place it with the rest of your ingredients.
  5. Sprinkle corn meal down into the cast iron pan, roll out your dough to about ½ " thickness and press it down into the pan. (Be careful, it's hot!)
  6. Add ricotta cheese, the sausage, and the butternut squash on top of the pizza dough.
  7. Melt 1 tablespoon of butter and 1 tablespoon of honey in the microwave for 30 seconds. (Keep an eye on that honey!) Stir it together and sprinkle in a half teaspoon of cinnamon. Brush this over the outside of the pizza, around the crust. Sprinkle with a light dusting of salt.
  8. Tear the mozzarella into small strips and place it all over the top of the pizza. Sprinkle on the fresh sage, and bake in the oven for 10 - 15 minutes, or until the crust is pillowy and golden and the cheese has melted. You'll get a few cheese crispies, but not like you get with traditional pizza.
  9. As soon as the pizza comes out of the oven, while it's still hot, drizzle it with honey and a sprinkle of crushed red pepper.

You're welcome. I promise this is going to be your new favorite pizza.

Storage:

This pizza keeps very well in an air-tight container for 2 - 3 days in the fridge. Just heat it up in the microwave of for 5 minutes or so in an 350° oven.

Side notes:

  • I also love adding caramelized onions to this pizza! It adds a little bit of a different flavor (a little less sweet), but still incredible!
  • This pizza is easy to "size down" or "size up" dependent on your crowd. If it's just you and your honey, the cast-iron method is spot on. If you're making this for your whole family, use a double batch of the pizza dough and make it on a pizza stone or baking sheet. (Follow the same instructions, just on a wider surface.)

I hope you loved this Butternut Squash and Sausage Cast Iron Pizza recipe! If you try it, I invite you to comment or share it on social media and tag @atoastedcrumb! I'd love to see your work!
