Sweet Heat Crispy Wings: Japanese BBQ and Chili Flake Wings

Published: Sep 1, 2024 Modified: Mar 9, 2025 ·by Amber Bogardus / This post may contain affiliate links.

JUMP TO RECIPE

Get ready to up your Game Day snack game with these crispy wings, seasoned with a delicious Japanese BBQ sauce and just a hint of chili flakes.

Each wing offers a perfect balance of sweet, savory, and a little kick of spice. They’re sure to be a hit with your friends and family, making your game day even more enjoyable!

I'm usually a Cajun Dry Rub wing gal, myself. But these sticky, spicy, sweet wings hit the spot last week! I immediately thought - what a crowd pleaser flavor for wings! They aren't too hot, not too sweet. Just right for a crowd!

With an extra crisping in the oven after saucing, that sauce caramelizes to the perfect golden brown and leaves you with these crispy bits all around the edges of the wing. So, SO good. So for those who are chili-flake obsessed, here's your new obsession.

What do you need to make Sweet Heat Crispy Wings?

  • frozen or fresh chicken wings
  • avocado oil
  • spices: garlic powder, onion powder, chili powder, paprika, salt, pepper
  • Japanese BBQ Sauce (Bachan’s is my favorite!)
  • Chili Flake (Momofuku is a great choice!)

How to Prepare Fresh or Frozen Wings

You can use either in this recipe, it's your preference! I wasn't able to find any fresh wings at the store for this recipe, so I went with frozen, and they were fantastic!

  • To prepare fresh wings: bake for 30 - 40 minutes in a 400° oven, or until internal temp measures 165°
    • Fresh wings will hold a marinade better than frozen wings.

  • To prepare frozen wings: bake for 45-60 minutes in a 400° oven, or until internal temp measures 175°
    • Frozen wings will hold a little more water weight than fresh wings, so make absolutely sure that you bake them on a baking rack, or you'll have soggy wings! No one wants that.

Do I need any equipment to make Sweet Heat Crispy Wings?

  • baking sheet with a baking rack (HIGHLY recommended)
  • large bowl for tossing

How to Make Sweet Heat Crispy Wings:

  1. Preheat oven to 400°.
  2. Toss wings in avocado oil, garlic, onion, and chili powders, paprika, salt and pepper.
  3. Bake in 400° for 30 – 40 minutes if fresh, and 45 – 60 minutes if frozen.
    • (Or until a meat thermometer reads 175° at each wing’s thickest point.)
  4. Remove from oven and toss with Japanese BBQ sauce and chili flake.
  5. If desired, place back in the oven for 5 – 10 minutes to crisp up the sauce.
  6. Serve as is, or with ranch dipping sauce!

Storage:

  • Wings can be stored in the fridge in an airtight container or plastic bag for 3 - 4 days. I do not recommend freezing these wings, as they are sauced - the sauce would get gummy upon thawing.

Accompaniments:

Serve Sweet Heat Crispy Wings with:

  • The classic - celery and carrots, can't go wrong here
  • Or French fries, rice, or salad!

Enjoy with ranch dressing or more Japanese BBQ Sauce for dipping.
